About the Department

The history of the department dates back as the artist Othman Waqi Allah - one of the pioneers of art - who pointed out that the Khartoum School of

Art, began in the mid-forties, when students of the Gordon Memorial College (present-day Khartoum University) were interested in uncovering the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy and using it as a form of Fine-Art. Pioneers such as the artist Ibrahim El-Solhi and the artist Ahmed Shebreen were the first artists to be interested. Green Law was the first dean of the Fine and Applied Arts Department in 1951 in the college, and he was probably the first to name Khartoum School which later became the Institute of Technological Colleges (the University of Sudan now). In 2006 and within the framework of the faculty’s plan to update its academic programs, it was seen necessary for the Art Education to be an independent department in its own right, which, after the approval of its programs, aspires to have an important role in bringing about the desired change. And that is by contributing to improve the educational process, spreading artistic and cultural awareness in the social milieu, and create knowledge openness at the local and regional levels. Therefore, art education is not concerned with preparing the individual for scientific and practical qualification only, but it plays an effective role in building the personality of the individual in an integrated and balanced manner, because it is a psychological, social and spiritual education that contributes positively to developing and refining the skills and personality of the student in terms of mental, emotional, sensory and kinesthetic aspects, from here the department looks forward to implement its program in the near future, seeking to achieve these goals and objectives within the general and specific educational goals of the program, with a focus on the quality of its outputs in light of the community's needs and the ability to support the educational system and modern community building.

Dear visitor welcome to the department webpage and I hope you find it useful. The department was established in 2006 after its programs had been approved by the university academic board. Since its establishment, the department sought to achieve leadership and developing local community through active participation in art exhibitions in the college and the other faculties of the university as well as providing consultation regarding art and art education, which improved the artistic taste despite the fact that the department does not it own student enrolled. Students are going to be admitted at the department in near future, and it worth mentioning that the department is one of the educational departments that have an impact on the faculty’s environment and community through its programs and future proposed programs of workshops, scientific symposiums. Thus the department administration seeks to assert the pioneering role of the department inside and outside the college.

The Department Mission

The department aims at preparing a well qualified Fine-Art teacher who is creative, preserving his religious and social values yet capable of using modern technologies and can make use of them in his profession so as to provide high quality teaching, as well as able to contribute in creating a community of knowledge and creativity. The department also aims at professionally and academically qualifying cadres so as to serve the community.

The Department Vision

The department seeks to provide specialized high quality knowledge in terms of Education, Fine-Art and some applied art fields. It uses up to date and advanced curricula and conduct teaching in educational and artistic environment. Thus it seeks to pioneer the teaching of Fine-Art Education nationally and internationally.

The Department Objectives

  • To introduce Fine-Art and Fine-Art Education, Applied Fine-Art, Artistic taste, and sensing the value aesthetics.
  • Preparing cadres for teaching Fine-Art in schools and universities through training them on producing artistic work.
  • Employing and making use of local materials in the applied aspects of the Art Education in the department.
  • Contributing to Fine-Art education activities to service the community by holding art exhibitions and presenting seminars.
  • Work to correct misconceptions in the role of visual Fine-Arts and keep pace with the needs of learners and society.
