About the Department

The department of English language of Faculty of Education University of Khartoum is one of central and earlier established

departments at the faculty. Its establishment is associated with The High Institute of Teachers in 1961which was later became faculty of education and joined to University of Khartoum. During this long period it graduated thousands of graduates who worked as teachers, university staff members, researchers inside and outside the country. The department is regarded as a building stone for the other department at the other Sudanese universities. It awards a BA of Arts and Education in English language in five years of ten semesters. The BA qualifies graduates to work as secondary and primary school teachers as well as preparing them for graduate studies in Education, language studies, literature, and translation. The department also awards a diploma of English for graduates of other universities of non honor qualification or whom English is not their main major so as to pursue its graduate studies. Regarding graduate studies, the department offers an MA of English Language Teaching (ELT) both taught and by research. It also offers a PhD of English Language (Applied Linguistics) and Literature (Both degrees by research).

The department is in partnership with other universities both nationally and internationally and some other international educational institutes such as British Council as well as other local educational institutes. It also plays a major role in training English language teachers as well as it contributes in raising the faculty’s staff level of English language mastery.

According to the proverb “If you want to change your life, you have to raise your standards”. So, the English Department is a door to creativity, learn about other people’s culture and change life for better. As a matter of fact, English language is widely spoken and taught in over 100 countries and it is commonly used around the world. It is the language of communication, science, research and the main window of the modern world. 

First of all, it’s my pleasure to welcome you on the department webpage and it is an honor to be one of its staff members. I do appreciate the great role of the department staff members in making the department pioneering in English language, language studies and ELT. Secondly, the English department at University of Khartoum, Faculty of Education helps students to build knowledge of the content and methods pedagogical, literary and linguistic studies. Our graduates are well-prepared for professional, graduate studies and for lifelong learning. Our role as English department is to equip the students with reasonable knowledge to face the challenges and obstacles in real-life. Last but not least I would like to express my gratitude to the university and the faculty’s administration for their generous and ongoing support to the department.

The Department Mission

The department main mission is to equip graduates with the necessary knowledge and skills so as to be prepared for their professional life. It also seeks to prepare them for graduate studies then they pursue their careers in education, language studies, research, leadership and publishing. Moreover, it aims at raising the standards of English language in the country.

The Department Vision

The department seeks to pioneer in the field of English language teaching, English language studies, and training. It also aspires to raise the standard of English Language and its use in the country aiming to its prosperity.

The Department Objectives

The department seeks to fulfill the following objectives:

  • The department seeks to pioneer English language teaching profession both regionally and internationally.      
  •  Equip the students with linguistic, pedagogical and literally knowledge.  
  • Prepare the students to undertake the English language teaching career.          
  • Making up a competitive environment for the students to learn creatively. 
  • Establishing appropriate work environment for staff teaching members.
  • Train staff members progressively through specialized courses in teaching.
  • Setting up good relations with the society and cooperate with educational bodies and institutes to serve and develop the community.
